Recently, in a memorandum passed by the Department of Personnel & Training, Government of India, it has been intimated that after the superannuation of Shri Harsvardhan Shringla, the present Foreign Secretary of India, Shri Vinay Mohan Kawatra will be appointed as the new Foreign Secretary. Here are the facts, you need to know about the next Foreign Secretary of India.
An Indian Foreign Service Officer
Shri Vinay Mohan Kawatra is a 1988 batch IFS officer. After joining to this coveted service, till 1993, he worked as a third secretary, & then the second secretary in India’s permanent mission to United Nations, Geneva. In addition to learning the French language there, he also handled tasks related to specialized agencies of the United Nations and the Human Rights Commission.
During this time Kwatra also earned a Diploma in International Relations from the Graduate School of International Studies in Geneva. Vinay Mohan Kwatra served as a desk officer at the United Nations-affiliated Headquarters between 1993 and 2003. He later served in diplomatic missions in South Africa and Uzbekistan.
Shri Kwatra served as a counselor between 2003 and 2006 and later as deputy chief of mission at the Beijing embassy. From 2006 to 2010, Kwatra represented India at the SAARC Secretariat in Nepal as the head of the Trade, Economy, and Finance Bureau.
He was the head of the Policy Planning and Research Division of the Ministry of External Affairs from July 2013 to October 2015. He then served as the head of the US Division of the State Department. Here he worked on India’s relations with the United States and Canada. He was India’s ambassador to France from August 2017 to February 2020, after working in the Prime Minister’s office from 2015 to 2017.
Ambassador to Nepal
At present, Shri Kawatra is working as the ambassador of the Government of India to Nepal. He will take charge as the Foreign Secretary of India after the superannuation of Shri Harsh Vardhan Shringla on 30.04.2022.
