Valmiki Samaj of Punjab decided to call on a bandh in protest of AAP’s Advocate General Anmol Ratan Singh Sidhu’s offendable comments about SC/BC category.

Here are few facts you should know about Valmiki Community.

Valmikis are the followers of Saint Valmiki, author of Hindu epic Ramayana, are placed at the bottom of the Indian caste system and endure near complete social ostracism.

They mainly live in northern India in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat and they work as sewage workers.

The Indian British government recruited Valmikis in their army and declared them a martial caste.

During the Indian Rebellion of 1857, many valmiki were prominent freedom fighters.

Notable examples include Matadin Bhangi, Gangu Mehtar, Bhura Singh Valmiki.

According to the 2001 Census of India, the Valmikis formed 11.2 per cent of the Scheduled Caste population in Punjab and….

… were the second-most populous Scheduled Caste in Delhi National Capital Region.

Still today, the people of Valmiki Community are facing extreme hurdles.
