Jagdeep Dhankhar, a Jat by caste, was born in 1951 into a farmer's family in Kithana, a small village in Rajasthan.

He entered public life after getting elected as a Member of Parliament from Jhunjhunu in the 1989 Lok Sabha elections on a Janata Dal ticket.

He joined the Congress in 1991 when PV Narasimha Rao became the prime minister. But with the rise of Ashok Gehlot in Rajasthan politics,
